The Year of the Lab: Impact during COVID-19

On March 24 at 1:00pm ET, Sunquest and API launched their free virtual series for 2021 with a new webinar entitled: “The Year of the Lab: Impact during COVID-19.”

The COVID-19 pandemic stressed many segments of the U.S. healthcare enterprise, not the least of which has been clinical laboratories who have dealt with lack of available assays and other supply chain issues, regulatory challenges, shifting and virtual workload, and more. However, in-system laboratories across the country rose to the occasion, providing critical diagnoses for COVID and other health conditions, and enabled their healthcare systems to continue to provide care, with immense clinical and financial impact. IT support for these efforts was significant, and included documentation and billing of test results, EMR alerts, data management, and interaction with public health labs and health system executives.

We need to reflect on this past year, recognize the fundamental impact of the lab on our healthcare systems, and prepare ourselves for the future. Lessons from this year will help us prepare for future viral pandemics, as well as improve the delivery of standard healthcare. Dr. Karen Kaul addressed these and other points in her lecture and also responded to questions put to her by the virtual audience.

Speaker:

Karen Kaul MD, PhD
Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Duckworth Family Chair

Moderated by:
