Achieving efficiency with anatomic pathology IT
The anatomic pathology laboratory at Yuma Regional Medical Center wanted to develop the most efficient, effective and scalable workflow possible. They tracked every case defect and performed root-cause analysis to reduce the likelihood of that defect reoccurring. Even with these efforts, 23-36 percent of cases still had at least one defect detected. The anatomic pathology supervisor decided to leverage information technology to achieve the workflow and case quality that human performance improvement could not achieve.
Yuma Regional Medical Center selected Sunquest PowerPath® as the comprehensive technology solution to achieve maximum output and the highest level of quality in their pathology workflow. The histology technologist, uses the solution on a daily basis and has found that by scanning the block before cutting it and using the safety measures that come with the product, it results in faster results, fewer wasted antibodies and better patient care.
Since implementation, the number of cases with defects has decreased from 26-36 percent of cases to less than 0.1 percent. In addition to an impressive improvement in turnaround time, test result output and staff efficiency, the time to gather data and create reports has improved from two weeks per report to four hours.
